According to Martin Lewis

According to Mr Lewis, the difference between various multi-car insurance offerings is shocking.

In a Facebook poll of 2,100 people, 40% with more than one car said multi-car won for them, 60% said separate policies did. – For Primo plc, the more significant the disparity between cars and drivers, the bigger the potential savings. Two vehicles aren’t our strength whereas 4 or more is.

Martin’s rule = a lot of work involved!! – Ask Primo plc to do the job for you – It can be very time-consuming especially if you have 4+ vehicles. The simple rule of thumb is to obtain quotes that are opposite to what you already have.

If you’re at renewal and are in a household with more than one car, and you’ve got multi-car insurance, then start by looking for the cheapest separate policy for each vehicle. If you have different policies, then start by checking multi-car insurance.

Unfortunately, you can’t use comparison sites to do multi-car searches (some look like they do, but they forward you to one insurer rather than making a comparison). So instead, you will indeed have to do this manually.

Multi-car policies: Here all cars are on one policy. The big name in multi-car is admiral.com which would always be my starting point, yet it’s not alone – both aviva.co.uk and lv.com are players in this area.

Yes we can add motorcycles to your policy

Multi-car discounts: Here you obtain a discount on the cost to insure each ‘additional’ vehicle. There’s morethan.com (15%), axa.co.uk (10%), esure.com (10%), priviledge.com (% varies) and sheilaswheels.com (10%).

There is also a range of companies that potentially offer discounts for those with more than one car. But here the cars aren’t all on the same policy - you have separate policies to get the discount.

The ideal way to achieve this is to use comparison sites (see below) for each car and keep a note of these firms’ prices for each vehicle.

Plus, as the discount is off each additional policy, insure the car with the cheapest premium first because you’ll usually get the discount on the next ‘additional’ (and subsequent) cars – and if they’re most expensive, you save more – Not always that easy.

If you don't drive them all at the same time why do you insure them as if you do?

Multi-policy discounts: Here the discount is for getting an additional policy, e.g. it could be a car policy and a home policy, but two cars also counts. Try directline.com (which is not on comparison sites) and churchill.com – the discount varies.

For individual cars use a comparison site for each vehicle. As they don’t check identical insurers and may have different premium costs for the same provider, it’s always best to do a few checks for a more extensive spread. Try some of the mainstream providers such as moneysupermarket.com, confused.com, gocompare.com and comparethemarket.com.

Tips to get a cheaper quote.

Always be honest about your occupation.

If you describe your job as a “chef” when applying for car insurance application form might mean your average quote is £98 higher than if you write “kitchen staff” GoCompare found – and it’s not only chefs that have this problem.

“Music teachers” pay £86, more than “teachers”, “office managers” pay more than “office administrators”, and “construction workers” pay more than “builders” who – in turn – pay more than “bricklayers”.

Interesting numbers but not sure we agree as all insurers will have different thoughts on occupations.

Does adding another more experienced driver to the policy help? This doesn’t work for us, however, believe it or not, adding another vehicle might.

It’s a crime to say someone who isn’t the primary driver of a car is, but adding a secondary driver is perfectly legal - and more than that, it can save you money.

Get their permission first, then add an experienced driver with a clean driving license and decent no-claims history to your insurance.

Red Classic American Car something you can have on our multi-vehicle insurance policy
We can include classics and modified cars

We know that many multi-car insurance providers are reluctant or even unable to cover family fleets or collections including non-standard vehicles, such as classic cars, supercars, camper vans or motorcycles. As a specialist in multi-vehicle insurance, we take particular pride in being able to assist our customers to find the correct cover they need in a way that suits them.

Multi-vehicle insurance policies prepared for all shapes and sizes

The only blueprint for our multi-car policy is that there must be more vehicles than drivers. We understand that every customer's requirements are different and we tailor the insurance cover to suit your individual needs.

Just a few examples of when our multi-vehicle insurance policies can be most helpful:

  • A simple car insurance policy that covers your daily drivers and maybe a classic or exotic weekend car.
  • A more complex policy that covers different vehicles for different uses including commercial use or even the odd wedding hire.
  • Insurance for extensive collections, for example, a tank collector with 40 historic ex-army vehicles.

No need to worry if you require a multi-car policy different to those above. Our policies are flexible and can be tailored to your individual needs.
